What is your purpose in life?

Ashley is the friendly and kind voice that you often will hear when you go through the Biggby Drive Through on Chicago Dr. in Grandville.
When I asked her my question, I was kind of getting worried, since I hadn’t found anyone to participate in my Lenten project yet today.
Ashley! (Her nametag has the exclamation point), did not hesitate at all when I asked her,
“What is your purpose in life?”   She said,
“To make people happy.  –That should be everyone’s purpose in life because to make someone happy is to make yourself happy.”

Ashley is currently studying to be a pastry chef, and has big dreams to eventually open her own pastry and coffee shop.   I am sure that would make a lot of other people, and Ashley herself VERY happy!

Hannah Pikaart is a senior at Hudsonville High School who is going to attend Hope College (my Alma mater!) in the fall.  I got to talking to her at Rivertown Crossings Mall today where she was being the spokesperson for the famous Barbizon Modeling Contest and Scholarship program. Hannah is planning on majoring in Theater and Writing at Hope and is looking forward to all of the campus traditions, especially Nykerk!

When I asked her, “What is your purpose in life?” She answered,
“It’s the same reason I like acting and writing.  I want to entertain people and make them happy.” –Hannah Pikaart

“I believe we are all here on purpose for a purpose.  My purpose is to be an instrument of peace in the world.  To do so, I nurture peace within myself and teach others how to find the peace within themselves.  When all of us find the peace within, there will be peace in the world.”
–Rev. Salvatore Sapienza

Sal is an interfaith minister that I ran into on Thursday.  He promised to think about my question and to email me his answer.  –I was surprised when he actually did so, because so many people have promised me that they would do so and then actually don’t! He also emailed me a picture, since I didn’t take one of him at the time.

Sal is also the brand new pastor at Douglas Congregational UCC.  His first Sunday there is 3/16/2014!  He keeps a blog at:

Bill Freeman is a United Church of Christ pastor that I met today.  He is a man who believes that you should walk your talk.  One of his proudest moments was being arrested for an act of Civil Disobedience when he was advocating in Holland, Michigan for local ordinances to protect LGBT people from losing their jobs or being kicked out of their apartments because of their sexual orientation.

This is day 8 of my Lenten Experience Experiment.  I love to hear people’s stories; and while my question is often an opening for someone to tell you their story, just as often it shuts down the conversation completely.

This is day four of my Lenten Experience Experiment: For Lent this year I am going to ask 40 people this question and post their answers along with their pictures.
I am surprised at the diversity of answers that I have gotten so far.   Many people that I have asked are very seriously thinking about their answers and have promised to get back to me.

This is day three of my Lenten Experience Experiment: For Lent this year I am going to ask 40 people this question and post their answers along with their pictures.
This is more challenging than I thought it would be. I am needing to be very intentional about getting these in every day.
